Unfortunately the 2020 Summer Programme has been cancelled due to COVID-19.
Applications for the 2021 Summer Programme will open in early 2021.
Make the most of your university holiday and gain international experience by taking part in Global Opportunities’ Summer Programme.
The Summer Programme offers all students (except those in their final year) the opportunity to take short courses at one of our partner universities. Programmes vary from year to year, however you can view our Summer School Brochure 2020 to see the variety of programmes that are available.
Students who take part in the Summer Programme
- benefit from free cover provided by Newastle University insurance.
- may be eligible to apply for funding bursaries to support travel and other costs.
- may receive discounts or tuition fee waivers as students from partner institutions.
Newcastle University Business School has a separate summer programme available for NUBS students, please visit the NUBS Summer Schools website for more information.
How to Apply
How to ApplyFollow the steps below to apply for the summer programme of your choice. Applications for Summer 2021 programmes will open in early 2021.
Step 1: Choose a summer programme
Look through the current Summer School Brochure and consider the opportunities available. Feel free to contact Global Opportunities for advice and support.
Some of the programmes have a limited number of free or discounted places for students from partner universities and spaces will be limited. Use your application to tell us why we should nominate you!
Step 2: Apply through Terra Dotta
Once the application period opens, visit Terra Dotta and click 'Apply Now'. Complete an application for each summer programme you are interested in. If you are applying for more than one programme, you can mention your preferences in your personal statement.
You must make an application through Global Opportunities to go abroad with Newcastle University before applying to the partner institution.
Step 3: Apply to the partner institution
Keep an eye on your emails to see if you have been successful in your application. If you are nominated, we will be in touch with all the information that you need to apply to the partner institution.
Step 4: Keep in touch and prepare to go abroad
Look out for emails from the partner institution regarding your summer programme application and from Global Opportunities with information on our pre-departure briefing.
Step 5: Get ready to have an unforgettable summer!
Research your destination and prepare yourself for Living Abroad.

The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) offers students from member universities funding for other overseas opportunities such as international youth leadership workshops, summer school grants, medical elective bursaries and research fellowships. Newcastle University is a member of the ACU.
The British Council list opportunities to study and work overseas, including their own internship and study programmes in China, language assistant programmes, paid industry placements for students from Northern Ireland and Scotland and travel opportunities for students from Wales.
Abroadship is a not-for-profit UK-based organisation which promotes training courses, events and exchanges with the aim of encouraging students to become global citizens.
Global Graduates helps students to become global graduates through study abroad opportunities, work placements, volunteering, languages and international jobs during and after their degree course.
Study China is a UK government funded 3-week language, culture and heritage programme open to UK and EU students of any level, which runs each summer.
The Kupcinet-Getz International Science School accepts a select number of outstanding undergraduate students each summer to participate in research projects in mathematics, physics, chemistry and the life sciences at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel.

Virtual Opportunities
International virtual opportunities range from online global challenges to virtual student discussion forums, conferences, and lecture series. International virtual exchange offers you the chance to connect with students across the globe, expanding your horizons and developing cross-cultural understanding and communication. We run virtual activities with our international partners throughout the year and encourage all students to participate.
We advertise international virtual events and activities through our Global Opportunities newsletter and on our GO news pages.
There may also be opportunities for you to take part in virtual exchange with students from our international partner universities through your school. Please speak to your School Exchange Coordinator if you are interested.
