Aims
To provide a broad understanding of the properties of civil and structural engineering materials and their application in design and construction.
Outline Of Syllabus
Steel, concrete and timber will be covered in detail, with coverage of the key considerations for more advanced materials such as glass, aluminium, fabrics, films, polymers and composites.
The properties of engineering materials will be explained by consideration of the underlying material science (metallurgy, concrete technology, timber structure & behaviour) and manufacturing processes. These properties include: strength, stiffness, failure behaviour (brittle or ductile), creep, durability, robustness, weight, cost, variability, availability, dynamic response and fatigue, embodied energy, aesthetics, speed of construction, thermal mass, waterproofness, re-use and recycling. The environmental impact of construction materials will be compared, and options to reduce environmental impact will be considered. Where appropriate these properties will be explored through practical laboratories. Utilisation of materials in construction will be considered with reference to the required material properties for each type of construction. For example, the forms of concrete construction (mass, reinforced, pre- or post-tensioned, in-situ, precast, fibre reinforced, shotcrete) will be discussed in terms of the required material properties for each form of construction and how those properties can be achieved. A wide range of case studies of existing structures and infrastructure projects will be used as a basis for discussion and analysis of materials selection for engineering applications, based on relative performance of materials and the impact of material properties on design.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Lectures are used to convey essential information
Workshops are used to encourage discussion of options for material selection case studies
Practicals provides hands-on active learning and reinforce classroom based learning
Assessment Methods
The format of resits will be determined by the Board of Examiners
Other Assessment
Description | Semester | When Set | Percentage | Comment |
---|---|---|---|---|
Computer assessment | 1 | M | 100 | 90 minutes online multiple choice and numerical exercises exam |
Formative Assessments
Formative Assessment is an assessment which develops your skills in being assessed, allows for you to receive feedback, and prepares you for being assessed. However, it does not count to your final mark.
Description | Semester | When Set | Comment |
---|---|---|---|
Report | 1 | M | Integrated VLE quizzes with feedback, throughout the module |
Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The multiple choice question examination will include both fundamental materials science and selection of materials for civil engineering applications. If will also assess learning outcomes from the lab-related activities
The formative assessment will reinforce the students learning throughout the semester, with quizzes and exercises being associated to individual lectures and activities, and feedback on those being provided.
