Aims
Students taking this module will undertake work on two sets of literary texts in the original Latin. The particular texts will be determined on a yearly basis, taking into account students' prior reading.
This module aims:
1. To further develop students' skills in translating, reading, interpreting and analysing original literary texts in Latin both seen and unseen.
2. To develop students' knowledge and understanding of the nature of specific Latin literary texts, and of problems and issues involved in the study of those texts.
Outline Of Syllabus
Students taking this module will undertake work on;
(i) a representative selection from Russell's Anthology of Latin prose, at the appropriate level.
(ii) a literary text in the original Latin.
The particular texts will be determined on a yearly basis.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The lectures fulfil several functions: continuous monitoring of students' translation of the set text by round - the - class translation; practice in unseen translation; practice in critical analysis and appreciation of the set texts; return of exercises done in students' own time.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The examination assesses students' skills in translating Latin texts in the original and their adaptability in applying those skills to passages taken from the set texts and one unseen passage.
The submitted work assesses students' knowledge and understanding of the text, its place within the field of Latin Literature and their ability to analyse a text with proper attention to linguistic detail.
Submitted work tests intended knowledge and skills outcomes, develops key skills in research, reading and writing.
No alternative assessment is available for this module. All exchange students taking this module are required to complete the normal assessment under all circumstances.
No variation of deadline will be allowed except on production of medical or equivalent evidence via the PEC process. An assignment received after the deadline without such evidence will be considered a late submission.
