The module will expand students' knowledge of chemistry and give them an understanding of the thinking process in developing a synthesis.
Outline Of Syllabus
Common organic molecules.
Basic types of reactions and the reaction mechanisms.
Synthetic route finding and selection.
Route enabling and synthesis optimization (solvent/solution, phase interface, catalyst, separation etc.).
Application of spectroscopy to determine molecular structure.

The lectures explain key concepts and outline illustrative examples. Tutorials and assignments will develop students’ understanding and application of the concepts.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
1. The exam will test the understanding of the basic concepts taught in this module. The exam will also assess the students’ knowledge and skills used in reaction route finding and selection.
2. The assignment will require the students to integrate the knowledge, concepts and skills learnt in this module to critically and intelligently evaluate the synthetic choices from the point of view of process development.
