Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Induction: As an introduction to the Law School and operating in conjunction with the university-level induction, there will be one present-in-person induction lecture which is used to familiarise the students with the Law School, its members, and their fellow students, each of which will run for two hours.

Transition workshops: There will one two-hour-long transition to higher education session that will take place later in semester one, in which the students will think back to the induction activities, their studies thus far, and identify potential challenges or cognitive thresholds that must be crossed in order to successfully transition from a more regimented and mentor-led process of learning at secondary school to a less structured and more independent form of student-led learning at university level.

Foundations of Legal Skills training: As a means of familiarising students with law-specific skills in order to aid their understanding and support the substantive module content delivered, there will be four two-hour-long Foundations of Legal Skills present-in-person workshops, which will deal with topics such as introducing legal skills and applying them in higher education settings, oral communication in law (covering topics such as mooting, advocacy, negotiation and client interviewing) and assessments in law, which are complemented by additional sessions and materials that will be provided online.

Employability and engagement: There will be two two-hour-long employability and engagement large group sessions that will both develop skills relevant to the Graduate Framework for Skills, as well as educating students about the range of legal and non-legal career options available to them upon successful completion of their degree.

Law and film series: As part of a ‘law in context’ approach to legal education, in which students are encouraged to think further on issues raised in the context of their programme of study generally as well as their modules specifically, a movie will be shown pertinent to the modules studied. The movie to be shown will have an explicitly legal focus, or alternatively, deal with a particular issue or social phenomena that have legal dimensions relevant to their modules of study (for example public law or land law). Students will then engage in a brief discussion about the potential legal issues arising in that movie, with students then being able to write a blog post about the issues identified. The best blog post will win a prize.
