The aim of this module is to provide an advanced level of knowledge of the origin, toxicity,
environmental fate and remediation of key organic & inorganic pollutants.
This module introduces some of the key organic and inorganic pollutants of environmental
significance.
Lectures cover the history, sources, uses and fates of a wide range of pollutants including metals and
crude oil. They also introduce key concepts such as toxicology and demonstrate how a compound's
chemistry influences its toxicity. The lectures in this module provide a view of biogeochemistry as a
tool in the treatment and control of wastes and will consider accidental pollution events and clean-up
procedures. The ways in which water and wastewater are treated by the water industry are also
considered.

Specialist knowledge and understanding are primarily imparted via lecture classes, supported by computer-hosted
reference materials and a one-day field trip. Students are encouraged and expected to learn through independent
reading and subsequent reflection. They are supported in this by the provision of a module specific reading list. Additional learning opportunities are provided through participation in, and discussion of, a one-day field trip. Key skills are practised through participation in the field trip.

The specialist skills, knowledge and understanding imparted during this module are assessed by means of a coursework report/essay. The coursework enhances self-learning and reinforces understanding of lecture material and tests knowledge on a range of topics in the module. The assessment will be suitable for Study Abroad students since the resources needed for its completion will be available online.
