What can I study?

At Newcastle University, you can choose from hundreds of different modules in a variety of subject areas. You have the freedom to customise your academic selection. You can take the required modules that fulfil your university requirements or delve deeper into an area of interest.

Study Abroad students can:

  • take modules from one subject area, for instance, Architecture
  • take modules from a variety of very different subject areas, for instance, Geography, English and Chemistry
  • choose our specialist Pre-Health Program, which delivers a core placement module and flexibility for additional modules of your choice

We recommend that you read our Module Guidance before you start the process of choosing modules. This will ensure you choose modules of the right level and credit value.

To make the module selection process easier, we’ve divided the modules up into different ‘pathways’ to help you find what you are looking for. Typically, a student will take between 3 to 5 modules totalling 60 credits in one semester. Students may selection modules from different ‘pathways’.

We also recommend that you consult with your advisors at your home university to know which modules will count towards your degree.

Credit transfer

At Newcastle University modules (i.e. classes) carry credit value.

Study Abroad students usually register for modules that add up to 60 credits for a single semester or 120 for a full year.

Credit equivalencies

60 credits at Newcastle University are approximately equivalent to:

  • 12 credits in Australia
  • 40 credits in Brazil
  • China TBC
  • 30 credits in the EU
  • 15 credits in Hong Kong (HKU 30 credits)
  • 19-22 hak-jeom in Korea
  • 30 ECTS in Norway
  • 15-18 credit hours in the US

Transcript of study

Study Abroad students complete the same assessments, assignments and examinations as full degree students. When you have completed your studies at Newcastle you will receive access to your academic transcript, which will include:

  • the modules you have studied
  • the credit value of each module
  • the Newcastle grades that you have been awarded for each module.

Your home institution may have their own grading equivalencies scale. Please ask your home institution about this.
