Mentor a refugee medical doctor with Refugees Care
Volunteering opportunity
We have partnered with Refugees Care, a Newcastle University research project working with Investing in People and Culture (IPC), a refugee-led charity in Middlesbrough, to provide our community with opportunities to volunteer during NCL in Action.
About Refugees Care
The North East has the UK’s highest per-capita concentration of dispersed asylum seekers — among them qualified doctors seeking to requalify and work in the NHS. At a time of critical NHS workforce shortages, supporting these doctors back into practice is both a humanitarian and a practical response. With the IPC, Newcastle University and Newcastle Hospital NHS Trusts, Refugee Care is building sustainable pathways to retraining and employment.
Who is eligible to get involved?
We are looking for medical professionals — practising or retired — who can partner with refugee doctors living in the North East of England. Experience of GMC registration, medical education or NHS recruitment is especially valuable, as is lived experience of joining the NHS as an international medical graduate.
North East-based volunteers are preferred for in-person support, but online meeting is welcome.
What is involved?
There are several ways you can support:
- One-to-one mentoring through GMC registration, PLAB and specialty applications
- Mock interviews and CV/application feedback
- Advising on clinical attachments and shadowing
- Pastoral support and orientation to NHS workplace culture
- Occasional workshops or talks for the wider cohort
