NCMD Theme seminar 3rd July 2026

Presenter: Dr Rebecca Strawbridge, Senior Lecturer in Affective Disorders, Centre for Affective Disorders, Department of Psychological Medicine, King’s College London.

Presentation title: Enhancing the quality of systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are often considered the highest level in evidence hierarchies and therefore are often drawn upon when considering changes in policy. Despite the importance of conducting unbiased systematic reviews, errors and lack of adherence to best practice are prevalent, particularly relating to transparency and bias minimisation. Building on the current guidelines, standards and tools, we have developed a ‘meta checklist’ which aims to maximise methodologically sound, unbiased and reproducible reviews of the best scientific quality while considering feasibility throughout the process. This session will follow the process of a systematic review and meta-analysis to advise and guide individuals in how to conduct high quality, impactful evidence syntheses.

Dr Strawbridge is a senior lecturer in affective disorders in the Centre for Affective Disorders (CfAD) at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience. While eclectic in modality and focus, her research broadly aims to optimise the future treatment of affective disorders, for example through multidisciplinary clinical trials and systematic evidence syntheses, particularly focusing on cognitive remediation and lithium interventions. Her research also includes examination of biological and non-biological markers of treatment response and treatment resistance in people with unipolar and bipolar affective disorders.
