Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Monash Bioethics Centre

PEALS Executive Director Jackie Leach Scully is spending 10 days as Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Monash Bioethics Centre, Monash University, Melbourne.

While there Jackie will be meeting with colleague Associate Professor Catherine Mills and others to discuss future research plans, following on from a grant development award from the Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness. The award, held from 2017-2018, funded preliminary research on social and ethical aspects of diagnosing foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).

While at Monash Jackie will present a departmental seminar on 'Epistemic distortion in disability' and also give a public lecture at the State Library of Victoria entitled 'What kind of human life? The ethics of human genome editing'.

Jackie will be combining the visit to Melbourne with a few days at the Centre on Research for Social Change, University of Wollongong (UOW). This is a recently established research centre headed by Professor Stacy Carter, who many will remember was a Visiting Scholar at PEALS in 2017. During her stay at UOW Jackie will be giving some training in the use of ‘dialogue groups’ in empirical bioethics, as well as continuing to work with Stacy on a jointly written paper on deliberative bioethics. The visit will consolidate the existing research links between PEALS and UOW.
