PEALS 20th Anniversary Seminar: Dr Alessandro Blasimme, Negotiating Data and Health in the Digital Age

Dr Alessandro Blasimme of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, visited Newcastle on October 16th to meet PEALS colleagues, discuss shared interests and deliver the third of our 20th Anniversary Seminars

Alessandro presented some of his current work on data as the raw material for knowledge production in healthcare sciences.  He began with an insightful analysis of the rhetoric of participation in research in national precision medicine initiatives in the US and the UK.

Reflecting on the US NIH programme ‘All of Us’, Alessandro described how personal data, once collected for research purposes is routed back to data subjects, and in this exchange acquires new meanings and can lead to effects on specific health-related behaviours.

He concluded with some thoughts on the newly emerging sphere of precision public health and how, as with public health initiatives in the past, this new iteration receives less attention and funding than the more individualised, personal, approaches to healthcare research and provision.

This well attended seminar developed into an engaged discussion between colleagues from across several disciplines which continued informally into the evening.
