When technology fails patients: engaging with stakeholders on metal-on-metal hip joint failures

Throughout the world some of the latest designs of hip joint replacements are failing in their thousands and causing health problems for the people concerned.

This project will bring together experiences of patients, engineers, clinicians and regulators in order to document ‘lessons learnt’ from recent hip joint failures.

The project will collect and collate stories from patients with failed hip joint replacement and use them to improve the engineering design of artificial hip joints.

In addition we will disseminate engineering knowledge with patient-relevance locally and nationally, through various events.
