NCMD Research Seminar Series 10th October 2025

Presenter: Dr Kavi Appuhamy, Psychiatry Core Trainee & Academic Clinical Fellow, York University

"TBC: Physical health and severe mental illness in developing countries"

This research examines why there is a growing mortality gap between people with severe mental illness and the general population, especially within the South Asian population where additional cultural, social and biological factors play a part in this.

Dr Appuhamy is currently a psychiatry trainee working in North Yorkshire and is an academic clinical fellow affiliated with the University of York. He has worked closely with the mental health and addictions research group and the Centre for Impact, which is an NIHR Global Health Research Centre. During the past four years, Dr Appuhamy has been involved in various projects examining the intersection of physical and mental health, looking specifically at physical health comorbidity in people with severe mental illness in South Asia.
