Jay Hall will be presenting: Understanding GP perspectives of their unmet needs in diagnosing depression
Jay is a third-year PhD student working in the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre team to map the pathway a person follows to receive a diagnosis of depression. The project aims to understand what the unmet diagnostic needs are in this pathway through interviews with key stakeholders, including individuals with a diagnosis of depression, as well as GPs and psychiatrists. For most individuals with depression, the first point of care is a GP in primary care, where around 90% of mental health problems are managed. Despite their central role, the accurate and timely diagnosis of depression remains a difficult challenge. This study explores GPs' perspectives of the unmet needs in diagnosing depression.
Isobel Hoppe will be presenting: Reducing the delay in the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder: A Qualitative study of General Practitioner and Psychiatrist perspectives
Isobel is a qualitative Research Associate from Keele University, who specialises in mental health trials. Previous work includes working with patients who have bipolar disorder, psychosis and generalised anxiety disorder. Isobel is about to begin a Doctorate in clinical psychology. In the UK, the recent Bipolar UK Commission of people living with BD found an average delay of 9.5 years between early symptoms of bipolar disorder and treatment. The aim of this qualitative study was to understand the challenges and facilitators involved in diagnosing individuals with BD from the perspectives of GPs and psychiatrists and how the delay in diagnosis of BD from the first presentation might be reduced.
