INSIGHTS Public Lecture: War in Europe: the invasion of Ukraine one year on (Panel Discussion)

Over a year after Vladimir Putin’s ‘special military operation’ – Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 – a panel of experts will discuss the course and state of the conflict and consider the future. Particular attention will be paid to the situation in Ukraine, the intentions of the Russian government, and international responses, including that of Britain.

Dr Martin Farr, Newcastle University (Chair)

Martin Farr’s teaching, supervision, and research covers all aspects of politics and public life in Britain since the First World War.

He took his PhD at Glasgow under Professor Hew Strachan, writing about British finance and strategy in the First World War, leading to several publications on the politics of the war including a monograph and an article in War in History. He is currently co-editing a volume entitled Presidents and Premiers: From Cleveland and Salisbury to Trump and May, 1895-2019 and is writing the chapters about Barack Obama and David Cameron, and Donald Trump and Theresa May. He is also co-editing another book in which he is contributing a chapter on military and imperial tropes in 1960s Britain. He is supervising PhDs on First World War trench art, international perspectives on the Falklands conflict, and on the German bombing of Britain after the Blitz. He is co-chair of Insights Public Lectures.

Professor Stella Ghervas, Newcastle University

Stella Ghervas is a Swiss author, historian and essayist with roots in Eastern Europe. She has lectured on four continents and is currently Professor of Russian History at Newcastle University. She is Associate of the Department of History at Harvard University and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Her main interests are in the intellectual and international history of modern Europe, with special reference to the history of peace and peace-making, and in Russia's intellectual and maritime history.

She is the author or editor of six books, most notably Réinventer la tradition: Alexandre Stourdza et l’Europe de la Sainte-Alliance (Honoré Champion, 2008, which won the Prix Guizot from the Académie Française) and Conquering Peace: From the Enlightenment to the European Union (Harvard University Press, 2021, which won the Laura Shannon Prize 2023). 

Dr Tetyana Lunyova, V.G. Korolenko Pedagogical University of Poltava, Ukraine

Dr Tetyana Lunyova obtained her PhD in linguistics from Kyiv National Linguistic University. She has been teaching the English language and linguistics at Poltava V.G. Korolenko National Pedagogical University (Poltava, Ukraine). She is currently a “Researchers at Risk” Fellow (the grant from the British Academy and CARA) at the Department of Education of the University of York.

Tetyana Lunyova is also a member of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine and a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine (section of Art criticism). Her fiction publications include 6 fairy tales for children and 2 books for adults. Her non-fiction creative writing has been published in various periodical editions and collected in a book of essays.

Dr Ian Garner, Author and Historian

Ian Garner graduated from the University of Toronto with a Ph.D. in Russian literature and history in 2017 after studying at the University of Bristol and St. Petersburg State Conservatory (Russia). His work has been featured in numerous publications and showcased in talks at universities, museums and conferences in North America, Europe and Russia. Ian’s publications include Stalingrad Lives: Stories of Combat & Survival (2022) and the newly released Z Generation: Into the Heart of Russia’s Fascist Youth (2023).
