Lonnie G. Bunch is a leading U.S. museum professional, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and a prolific author who has received honorary doctorates from Princeton, Brown, and Rutgers. Lonnie is the founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture that opened to critical scholarly and public acclaim on 24 September 2016. The museum is located on the National Mall in Washington DC adjacent to the Washington Monument. In 2002, President George W. Bush appointed Lonnie to the Commission for the Preservation of the Whitehouse; President Obama reappointed Lonnie in 2009.
