To give students an understanding of the separation technologies used in the process industries.
To provide an introduction to mass transfer theory and phase equilibria and enable these to be applied to the design of selected separation processes and plant equipment.
Outline Of Syllabus
Review of basic principles of mass transfer-diffusion, diffusivity and mass transfer coefficients
Introduction to phase equilibria & separations. Introduction to equilibrium stage separations (e.g. distillation) and rate controlled separations (e.g. gas absorption, stripping)
Multistage separations. Continuous and batch distillation. McCabe-Thiele method. Reflux ratio
Single stage separation. Flash Distillation.
Hydraulic design of distillation columns- Introduction to various types of column internals: trays and packings and merits of using each type. Sieve tray design. Design of packed columns.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Lectures convey the underlying scientific and technological principles of separation processes.
Tutorials address problems in understanding the taught material on individual or small group basis. The HYSYS assignment will develop skills in modelling separation systems using a flowsheeting package.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The exam will test the students' understanding of the separations technology they have learned about during the lectures and their knowledge of separation process design methods. The HYSYS assignment will test the students' ability to model and analyse the behaviour of separation systems.
