Jenny studied for a Law Degree (University of Newcastle), MA in Criminal Justice Studies (University of Leeds) and Diploma in Legal Practice (Leeds Metropolitan University). Work in practice includes family law and child law and as a volunteer case-worker at a Law Centre in the areas of family, housing, employment, immigration and welfare law. Jenny came to Newcastle, as a Lecturer in October 2007, having previously worked in the School of Law, University of Glasgow from October 2005 and University of Sheffield, Law School, from October 1998. Jenny has worked on numerous research funded projects including the Home Office Evaluation of Restorative Justice Schemes and Home Office Evaluation of Statutory Time Limit Pilots in the Youth Court, DCA funded project looking at the Non Legally Qualified Advisors and their Clients - Perceptions of Quality (PI) as well as various Scottish Government funded research projects. These projects have involved both quantitative and qualitative methods of research and some a mixed methods approach. Jenny is also a Chair Panel Member for the Childrens Hearings System in Scotland.

Policy Responses to Gender Based Violence in Scotland - Michele Burman and Jenny Johnstone along with Janette de Haan and Jan Macleod of the Women's Support project received a grant from the Equality and Human Rights Commission for a project entitled: Responding to gender Based Violence in Scotland: the Scope of the Gender Equality Duty to Drive Cultural and Practical Change.
