PEALS emerged out of the Newcastle University GENCOM (Genetics in the Community) collaboration The need for a unit addressing the socio-ethical aspects of a range of life sciences was stimulated by international controversies in life science developments and applications. We now have an extensive and vibrant regional, national and international network addressing the challenges and opportunities that life sciences present for society.
The PEALS agenda is to research, inform and improve socio-ethical aspects of professional practice, policy making, and public engagement in the life sciences.
The ‘PEALS model’ involves the close integration of international research, with excellent continuing professional development, and a lively programme of public engagement. Since 1999 PEALS has grown from Professor Erica Haimes (as part-time Director) and Dr Tom Shakespeare (as the first full time appointment) to a team of over 20. As a unit we have raised over £4 million in salaries, grants and other income since 1999 and we have published over 100 scholarly books and articles, as well as many other reports.
Institutionally, we are part of
the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology
at Newcastle University and formally recognised as a University Research Centre. The School, University and regional and national collaborating individuals and research centres provide PEALS with a network
of “critical friends” of internationally respected calibre and a
strong support infrastructure, both of which are vital to the success of any
research group.
