The idea that language is innate has been expounded in works of popular science such as Steven Pinker's The Language Instinct. However, within the field of language acquisition, there is still a great deal of controversy around this claim. Dr Nick Riches, Newcastle University, will discuss the opposing viewpoint, that human beings can acquire language without the aid of innate mechanisms.
