The School of Psychology develops and delivers vocational and non-vocational research-led teaching programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The School acts as a nodal point for psychological research across the University, beyond as well as within the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

Our BSc Psychology course is accredited by the British Psychological Society. It is taught mainly by academic staff in the School of Psychology and the Institute of Neuroscience (ION). Modules in the first two years are prescribed by the BPS requirements to cover the broad range of psychological approaches and methods, but in the third year students choose from a wide range of options that reflect Newcastle’s expertise in evolutionary and comparative psychology, abnormal, clinical and health psychology, developmental psychology and cognitive neuroscience. They also conduct an extended research project. Non-accredited Joint (BSc) and Combined (BA) programmes are also available in which psychology is studied alongside other subjects.

The School hosts the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and coordinates delivery of new training programmes under the government initative for Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT). We also have a new Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Diploma starting in January 2012. The teaching on these programmes is conducted by staff based in the School, ION, and by a number of honorary or seconded NHS staff.

We accredit stand-alone e-learning modules in cognitive behaviour therapy (PRAXIS CBT) in partnership with NTW Trust. Further postgraduate taught programmes are currently under development.

Postgraduate research students (MPhil or PhD) in Psychology would usually be based in the ION (or possibly another Institute) depending on the supervision and research facilities needed.

Please also find the School's safety summary for information.

The Head of the School of Psychology is Professor Vicki Bruce.
