Jonathan Ward

Teaching Fellow in Public Relations

Background

Jonathan Ward is an award-winning communications professional who has worked continuously within the media industry since 1992. In 2006, Jonathan set up his own PR consultancy successfully competing against more experienced agencies to win contracts with organisations across the North East and within range of sectors including education, sport, manufacturing, engineering and enterprise.

Previously, Jonathan worked as a local government reporter for the Hartlepool Mail newspaper, breaking several international news stories including Peter Mandelson MP’s Ministerial resignations; the ghost ships scandal; and the election of Hartlepool’s monkey mayor!

Jonathan teaches on several PR theory and professional communications practice modules at the University of Newcastle, as well as modules exploring public affairs for journalists. He maintains practical and industry links by providing PR and communications consultancy for several North East business and organisations.

Outside of work, Jonathan is passionate about live music and is a committee member for The Studio live music venue and recording facility in Hartlepool.

Teaching

  • April 2017 - achieved merit for Descriptor 1 (Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy - CASAP qualification)

  • Continue to develop and update delivery of relevant modules – eg. content and delivery of public affairs module (8164/3164) which will be combined between Level 3 and MA from 2017/18. Using guest speakers across all modules eg. Local MPs; political correspondents; PR managers for local political parties 

  • Continues to organise cross module crisis conference role play workshops for MA PR and Journalism students. Liaise with other module leader and colleagues on implementation, and consider potential of contributing same sessions to other MCH programmes
