The BEWISe facility is the first of its type in Europe in large-scale wastewater treatment research using real time wastewater, based at Northumbrian Water’s sewage treatment plant at Birtley, near Gateshead.  The BEWISe facility will play a key role in improving how sewage is treated, enabling academia and industry to explore innovative ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce energy consumption and contribute to net zero carbon emissions. 

Using real time wastewater speeds up the translation from research to validation of new innovations by the water sector.

BEWISe is available to academia and industry and encourages research applications from all funding sources.
