Network upgrades for EVs who pays

Network Upgrades for Electric Vehicles: who ultimately pays?

This invitation only event discussed research funded by CESI through the Centre’s first Flexible Fund led by Professor Karen Turner of the University of Strathclyde.

The UK and Scottish Governments have set ambitious targets for the roll-out of electric vehicles (EVs). With that comes a shift in demand away from petrol and diesel fuels and towards electricity, which has major impacts for the electricity system.

CESI funded a team led by Professor Karen Turner, Director of The University of Strathclyde's Centre for Energy Policy, to conduct research on how the costs of network upgrades will impact across the UK economy, set against the benefits of EV roll-out. This has a particular focus on how GDP, activity in different industries and household incomes may be impacted.

This roundtable discussion provided an opportunity to bring together key policy stakeholders associated with the network investment required to enable the roll-out of EVs.  The programme included roundtable discussions with other stakeholders, thus providing delegates useful insights around the timing and investment required to enable the roll-out of Electric Vehicles. The findings of our work will be used as the basis for discussions considering the implications for future research and policy design.

The event was part of the University of Strathclyde’s Engage with Strathclyde Programme.
