In-Sessional English

The In-Sessional English team can help you to use the English language to effectively communicate knowledge in your academic studies.

In-Sessional English

The skills your degree depends on

No one arrives at university knowing how to research, plan, and write an assignment, contribute effectively to a seminar, or work through a long reading list. Every student learns these skills during their degree. We teach them directly.

If you are an international student at Newcastle, In-Sessional classes are free and run alongside your studies. This is not about fixing your English. Your English brought you here. Our classes help you do more with it.

What we teach

  • Academic writing: Build arguments that convince, in the style your subject expects.
  • Speaking and interaction: Seminars, group work, presentations, oral assessments. The unwritten rules of academic talk, made explicit.
  • Reading: Get what you need from a long reading list, efficiently.
  • Lectures: Listen strategically and take useful notes.

We work closely with your school to identify what students in your subject need, so classes reflect the real demands of your modules and assessments.

Attend as often as you wish

There is no limit on attendance. Choose the classes that match what you are working on now and return as often as is useful.

One-to-one Writing tutorials

Book a free online tutorial and work through your own writing with a tutor. Not proofreading: you leave with strategies you can apply to every assignment that follows.
