Funding your opportunity

Before making any decisions or applications, its important to consider how you will fund your placement.

The cost will depend on the type of short-term opportunity you chose. All prices will be included in our listings will be detailed in full on partner websites.

Some programmes might include accommodation or particular activities, like a social and cultural event, in the price. Make sure to check what’s included in your chosen opportunity so that you can budget accordingly.

The scholarships below are intended to support with costs associated with your short term placement - they will likely not cover all costs involved. Please consider this in your research.

GO Global Scholarship

Closed for applications

The GO Global Scholarship is currently closed for applications. 

The applications for Summer 2026 will open on Tuesday 21st October 2025. Please read the below information carefully before considering an application.

Newcastle University is pleased to offer the GO Global Scholarship to support students from under-represented groups access a global placement in 2026.

The scholarship is only available for Global Opportunities-approved programmes, which are:

Please note, the GO Global Scholarship is only available to students who did not receive a scholarship in academic year 2024-25.

Award summary

There are three values of award available, depending on the opportunity undertaken:

  • £1,500 for placements in EU countries
  • £2,000 for placements in Non-EU countries
  • £500 for virtual placements
Eligibility criteria

You must be a current Newcastle University student (final year students included) to be eligible. You must also meet at least one of the eligibility criteria below:

  • students in receipt of the NCL Opportunity Scholarship/with an annual household income of £40,000 or less
  • care leavers and students who are care experienced
  • students who have caring responsibilities
  • estranged students
  • refugees and asylum seekers
  • ethnic minority students who went to a UK state-funded school
  • you must not have received the scholarship in academic year 2024-25

Please note we have a very limited amount of funding for postgraduate and international students. Please ensure you apply early.

All eligible students are welcome to apply, however, we are prioritising students who have not received a scholarship in the 2024-25 academic year. This is due to limited funding and aiming to ensure as many students as possible can benefit from the award.  

Please read the eligibility criteria carefully before making an application. You will be required to provide evidence of your eligibility as part of the application process.

Application dates

There are two application periods for the GO Global Scholarship 2026. These are:

  • Period 1: Tuesday 21 October 2025 – Sunday 4 January 2026
    • Mandatory pre-departure session w/c 26 January
  • Period 2: Monday 15 February 2026 – Sunday 3 May 2026
    • Mandatory pre-departure session w/c 4 or 11 May

There are an equal, set number of scholarships available in each period. This is to ensure there is time for students to review the full suite of placement options, as partner programmes will be advertised from October – May. In general, volunteering and internship programmes organised by our external partners will open for applications before Christmas (coinciding with application period 1), and summer schools are usually advertised after Christmas (coinciding with application period 2). 

The Global Opportunities team will review applications on a weekly basis (where possible) throughout the application periods. We aim to inform students on the outcome of their application (via email) within two weeks of receipt.

How to apply

Applications will be managed via Terra Dotta, the university’s global placement system. This system contains mandatory requirements for going abroad. Please make sure to check Terra Dotta regularly as new requirements are released at different stages of your application. 

You can either:

Apply for a scholarship without having a confirmed place on a programme

We understand the need to confirm receipt of a scholarship before searching for a programme, as this will form part of your budgeting process. The team will confirm your eligibility for a scholarship and will reserve the funding for you until you have found a programme. Please aim to have a confirmed place on a programme by the end of the application period – if you know your programme isn’t accepting applications until later in the year, please wait for application period 2.

Apply for a scholarship after receiving a confirmed place on a programme

If you already have a confirmed placement on a programme – fab! You can input this information with your scholarship application and if accepted, we will process your grant agreement according to the dates above.

 

Payment process and schedule

If you are eligible for the scholarship, you’ll need to provide the below details in Terra Dotta:

  • Bank Details
  • Programme Details
  • Review & Sign the Conditions of Participation

Once we have this information, the GO team will issue your Grant Agreement.

Grant agreements

A Grant Agreement is a contract between you and the University that outlines your obligations and the Terms & Conditions of your scholarship. This document must be read carefully to ensure information is accurate.

During each application period, Grant Agreements are issued the first week of every month as seen below. Grant agreements will only be issued if we have the correct information submitted via Terra Dotta. Grant agreements will not be issued outside of these dates so please consider this when applying to programmes and paying deposits.

Period 1:

  • Monday 3 – Friday 7 November
  • Monday 1 – Friday 5 December
  • Monday 5 – Friday 9 January

Period 2:

  • Monday 2 – Friday 6 March
  • Monday 6 – Friday 10 April
  • Monday 4 – Friday 8 May

We will send the Grant Agreement to your university email address to sign via Adobe Sign. The fully signed agreement must then be uploaded to Terra Dotta.

Payments

Payments are requested on a weekly basis where possible. Payments will only be made once the fully signed grant agreement has been uploaded to Terra Dotta.

You will receive an email confirming your payment has been requested, please allow 10 working days for this to arrive with you.


Sustainable Travel Grant 2025

The GO Global Scholarship is currently closed for applications. 

The applications for Summer 2026 will open on Tuesday 21st October 2025. Please read the below information carefully before considering an application.

Newcastle University is committed to reducing its carbon footprint.

The sustainable travel grant is a one off additional payment of £350. It supports students travelling to EU destinations via more climate conscious modes of transport. For example, those consciously choosing a train, bus or ferry, rather than a plane. 

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the grant, you must be:

  • a current undergraduate Newcastle University student, paying home tuition fees
  • in receipt of the GO Global Scholarship
  • taking part in an approved short-term global placement in Europe 
  • making both the outbound and inbound journey via climate conscious travel
Application dates

The grant will be awarded to students as and when they submit their travel evidence within the two application periods (please see the GO Global Scholarship ‘application dates’ section above).

There are limited grants, which will be awarded on a 'first come, first serve' basis throughout the application periods.

How to apply

Applications for the travel grant will be managed via Terra Dotta. Students can only apply once they have been awarded a GO Global Scholarship and have had their place on a partner programme confirmed.

To receive the grant, students will need to provide evidence (transport booking details, receipts, etc.) to demonstrate that the entire trip will be undertaken using more climate conscious methods of transport. This evidence will need to be uploaded to Terra Dotta in advance of the trip.

The Global Opportunities team will review applications on a weekly basis throughout the application period. We aim to inform students on the outcome of their application within two weeks of submission.

Payments are made weekly (where possible) to the bank account provided for your scholarship.
