Fees, Funding and the Global Scholarship

Funding your opportunity
We know the benefits of undertaking a Global Opportunity. However, before making any decisions, it’s important to consider how you will fund your placement.
The cost will depend on the type of short-term opportunity you chose. All prices will be included in our listings will be detailed in full on partner websites.
Some programmes might include accommodation or particular activities, like a social and cultural event, in the price. Make sure to check what’s included in your chosen opportunity so that you can budget accordingly.

Newcastle University is pleased to offer the ‘GO Global Scholarship’. This Scholarship helps students from under-represented groups access a global placement in 2025.
The scholarship is only available for Global Opportunities-approved programmes:
- summer schools organised by our Exchange Partners
- programmes with our partner External Organisations
- internships with the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience
Award summary
There are three values of award available, depending on the opportunity undertaken:
- £1,500 for placements in EU countries
- £2,000 for placements in Non-EU countries
- £500 for virtual placements
Payment of the Scholarship will be made on confirmation of the placement (via a placement offer or registration document from the host organisation) once students have met all of the necessary administrative requirements.
Eligibility criteria
You must be a current Newcastle University student (final year students included) to be eligible. You must also meet at least one of the eligibility criteria below:
- students in receipt of the NCL Opportunity Scholarship/with an annual household income of £40,000 or less
- care leavers and students who are care experienced
- students who have caring responsibilities
- estranged students
- refugees and asylum seekers
- ethnic minority students who went to a UK state-funded school
Please note we have a very limited amount of funding for postgraduate and international students. Please ensure you apply early.
All eligible students are welcome to apply. However, if we are over-subscribed, we may prioritise applications from students whose degree programmes do not already include a global placement and/or those who have limited experience of travelling abroad.
Please read the eligibility criteria carefully before making an application. You will be required to provide evidence of your eligibility as part of the application process.

Application dates
This scholarship is currently closed for applications.
We encourage eligible students to submit a funding application at the earliest opportunity, even if they haven’t made a firm decision on which summer opportunity to pursue. We will work with you over the coming months to help you select an appropriate placement.
How to apply
Applications will be managed via Terra Dotta, the university’s global placement system.
The application process includes the submission of an online form and a short personal statement. Your application will be assessed based on these documents. If you need further support, take a look at our GO Global Scholarship Application instructions.
The Global Opportunities team will review applications on a weekly basis throughout the application period. We aim to inform students on the outcome of their application within two weeks of receipt.

Newcastle University is committed to reducing its carbon footprint.
The sustainable travel grant is a one off additional payment of £350. It supports students travelling to EU destinations via more climate conscious modes of transport. For example, those consciously choosing a train, bus or ferry, rather than a plane. This includes both the outbound and return journey to/from home).
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for the grant, you must be:
- a current undergraduate Newcastle University student, paying home tuition fees
- in receipt of the GO Global Scholarship
- taking part in an approved short-term global placement in Europe (the placement must also take place between the end of May 2025 and early September 2025)
How to apply
Applications for the travel grant will be managed via Terra Dotta. Students can only apply once they have been awarded a GO Global Scholarship and have had their place on a partner programme confirmed.
To receive the grant, students will need to provide evidence (transport booking details, receipts, etc.) to demonstrate that the entire trip will be undertaken using more climate conscious methods of transport. This evidence will need to be uploaded to Terra Dotta in advance of the trip.
The Global Opportunities team will review applications on a weekly basis throughout the application period. We aim to inform students on the outcome of their application within two weeks of receipt.
