Newcastle Poetry Festival '23 Commission
The Newcastle Poetry Festival returns in 2023 from 11-13 May at Northern Stage. Under the theme of ‘Communities’, the Festival continues to champion marginalized communities and is committed to programming inclusive events. Our Festival draws on the talents of poets across the UK, while showcasing Northern writing and publishing.
We are hosting an open call for cross-genre performances at the Festival. We are asking artists to explore the theme of ‘Dear Neighbour’ in original, specially-created performances lasting 5-10 minutes. The commission can be a work of poetry, but we also welcome performances of all kinds: spoken word, rap, song, film, sound, theatre, etc. The commission is open to all UK creative practitioners at any stage of their careers.
At this stage, we are looking for proposals of 250 words and a sample of work. This could be 3-5 pages of writing, a short video/audio submission or 2 links to recordings and performances. The deadline is Friday 31 March 2023. Successful proposals and applicants will be informed by April 10th. The commissions will be judged by Festival Director Theresa Muñoz, Founding Festival Director Linda Anderson, Acting Dean of Culture and Creative Arts James Annesley and poet and University Chancellor, Imtiaz Dharker.
The winning commissions will receive £300 and the opportunity to perform at the Festival on Saturday 13 May. Please email all proposals and/or queries to Dr Theresa Muñoz at theresa.munoz@ncl.ac.uk
