THE LONG FORM: Translation, Fiction and the Art of the Essay: Kate Briggs in conversation with Preti Taneja

Date/Time: Thursday 4th May, 7pm to 8pm

Venue: Culture Lab, Newcastle University

Kate Briggs is a writer, translator and teacher based in Rotterdam, NL. Her work pushes at the formal boundaries of the literary essay in witty, speculative prose; exploring the intricacies of translation and narrative structure in revelatory, provocative ways. She is the winner of the Windham Campbell Prize, one of the world’s richest literary awards. Her books include a translation of Hélène Bessette’s novel Lili pleure (first published in 1953) and This Little Art (Fitzcarraldo Editions, 2017), a narrative essay on the practice of translation. Her brilliant new novel The Long Form, about motherhood, translation and the art of writing is a Guardian pick for 2023 and also published by Fitzcarraldo Editions this year.

Preti Taneja is Director of NCLA and Professor of World Literature and Creative Writing at Newcastle University
