Torrey Peters’ novel Detransition, Baby (Serpent’s Tail, 2021), was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction and the PEN/Hemingway Award and selected for the New York Times Notable Books of 2021 and The Times Best Books of 2021. She is the author of novellas Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones and The Masker. Torrey has an MFA from the University of Iowa and a Masters in Comparative Literature from Dartmouth. She was born in Chicago and splits her time between Brooklyn and an off-grid cabin in Vermont.
'Irresistible ... Perhaps Detransition, Baby is the first great trans realist novel? Witty, elegant and rigorously plotted, Peters' book breezily plays with the structural conventions of literary realism ... Peters' novel approaches the well-trodden topic of baby fever, and although it renders the specificity of trans community and subjectivity in vivid, electric prose, its real appeal is much wider.’ (Grace Lavery, Guardian)
‘This nuanced portrait of trans feminine culture riffs on Sex and the City to challenge taboos around family, gender and relationships. Funny, irreverent, compassionate, it marks a watershed in queer literature.’ (Evening Standard Best Books of 2021)
CJ Hauser's first full length work of nonfiction, The Crane Wife & Other Essays is forthcoming from Viking UK in Spring 2022. Her novel Family of Origin was published by Doubleday in 2019, and debut novel, The From-Aways, was published by William Morrow in 2014. Work has also appeared in Tin House, Narrative Magazine, The Paris Review, TriQuarterly, Esquire, Third Coast, The Kenyon Review, The Guardian, and The New York Times. She holds an MFA from Brooklyn College and a PhD from Florida State University and teaches creative writing and literature at Colgate University.
This event is part of the 'pass the baton' NCLA series - a writer is interviewed, then choses a writer to interview. Who will Torrey Peters choose to interview in the autumn 2022?
