Staff Profile

I have a professional background as a CBT Therapist, Clinical Psychologist, and Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology at Newcastle University. 

My doctoral research investigated the individual differences in response to James Bennett-Levy’s Self-Practice/Self-Reflection paradigm during CBT diploma training. This experience sparked interest and passion for training therapists, and specifically for personal and professional development. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority (HEA), have held the post of Academic Director for the Newcastle Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, and am now the Deputy Director of the Newcastle Post-graduate Diploma in CBT. In addition to this, I am a Schwartz Round Facilitator and member of the University Schwartz Round Steering Group, which provide Schwartz Rounds for Faculty of Medical Sciences Students and Staff as part of the University’s programme of Inter-Professional Learning (IPE). I am currently working in collaboration with Dr Jade Biyu-Du from the School of Modern Languages on developing approaches to inter-professional interpreter mediated therapy training for interpreters and therapists.  In addition to IPE, my areas of interest include therapist self-care and burnout. 

On qualifying as a Clinical Psychologist from Newcastle University in 2007, I worked in Secondary Care Adult Mental Health in West Cumbria. I then returned to train as a CBT therapist in the first wave of the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies programme (now NHS Talking Therapies), working for 3 years as a High Intensity Therapist before returning to Clinical Psychology roles within Primary Care and Specialist Palliative Care. As part of my work in Specialist Palliative Care I trained under Kathryn Mannix to deliver multi-disciplinary CBT skills training programmes and supervision for physical health professionals working in palliative care and cancer care and was also involved in developing and piloting the first PWP role within Specialist Palliative Care. Since 2022, I have been establishing a Regional Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) Psychology Service (Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust). and am a founding member of the National TTP Psychology Network. In addition to establishing a clinical health psychology service for people with TTP, I am also involved in research investigating patient experiences of TTP.
