Philanthropy and the making of Newcastle University
Date/Time: 20 November 2018, 19:00
Venue: Spence Watson Lecture Theatre, 2nd Floor, Armstrong Building, Newcastle University
The story of how philanthropy helped raise Newcastle University from a college of Durham University to an independent, world leading institution, nowadays admired for the excellence of its teaching and research, has never before been fully told. In this lecture, Professor Helen Berry, Head of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the university, fills many of the gaps in our knowledge, exploding old myths and celebrating the individuals whose energy, generosity and foresight have really made a difference to the success of the institution.
