Film

See the world through a lens.

Develop an advanced level of knowledge and skills in film-making. In our Film department, whether you're doing an undergraduate or research degree you'll gain a deep understanding of the relationship between documentary practice, film theory and the film industry.

Learn from scholar film-makers in our state-of-the-art facilities and develop a range of professional skills to prepare you for your future.

Our film graduates have produced an array of documentary films. Many have been nominated and won some of the most prestigious documentary film awards in the UK. These include the North East regional and national Royal Television Society Awards (RTS) and the Grierson Awards (The British Documentary Awards).

Across all levels, we foster a collaborative environment where technical mastery meets intellectual ambition. Our students graduate not only as a skilled filmmaker with a strong body of work, but as a creative professional equipped for a future working in film.

It’s unbelievable how quickly you learn when you get your hands on the tools. Before I started my course, I didn’t know anything about camera work, or video and sound editing. After a year practising these skills, I have learned so much.
