Commuter students

Each year, a growing number of students choose to live off campus, mainly at 'home' with family, a partner, friends or alone.

Some students live in Newcastle and others are spread across the region and beyond. There are many advantages of not living in 'student' accommodation, including saving money and being able to fulfil family commitments.

We’ve compiled some information that may be helpful for commuting students:

Park and ride is another option if you don’t want to drive in the city centre.

Other forms of transport

There are extensive cycle routes/lanes available across the city centre. Newcastle University has bike stands throughout as well as secure cycle parking available.

Library resources

The LibbyApp is a fantastic resource that gives all students free access to a huge range of magazines, audiobooks and e-books for leisure reading! There’s also a ‘Student Life’ collection of books and magazines with tips for student living, including cost effective recipes and budgeting tips.

The SCONUK Access Scheme allows you to visit other academic libraries around the country, so if you live closer to a different university you can use their facilities instead free of charge.

Sport resources

All students benefit from the BUCS UNIversal Gym Membership. If you become a member of the University Sports Centre, you have the opportunity to access more than 90 gyms in the UK. More information is available on our Sports Membership webpage.
