New Alumni Achievement Award categories unveiled for 2024 – and nominations now open!

Three new categories have been launched for the 2024 Alumni Achievement Awards, celebrating the best of Newcastle University’s 270,000-strong global alumni community.

15 March 2024

The categories reflect the values of the university that are imparted on students during their time with us and that they carry with them in their journeys as graduates. The awards are open to all alumni, irrespective of when they graduated, and celebrate the best of the best.

Celebrating community champions

The first new category launched for the Alumni Achievement Awards is ‘Outstanding social and civic contribution’. This award celebrates alumni who are making a real difference in their community, and could include those volunteering for community groups, supporting underrepresented communities or creating new business and culture for the benefit of their community.

Newcastle University was originally founded to educate pioneers of the industrial revolution and address social challenges like public health. This founding ethos remains ingrained in our institution today, and the ‘Outstanding social and civic contribution’ award recognises the phenomenal impact of Newcastle graduates around the world in improving society for all.

Inspiring inclusion

The second category – ‘Outstanding global and intercultural contribution - recognises Newcastle graduates who have led the way in the integration of people and cultures, and who are breaking down barriers to create a greater sense of inclusivity across issues such as race, age, gender and disability.

Newcastle University values individual differences and the diversity that this brings, from our long-standing PARTNERS programme that supports students from underrepresented backgrounds to access a university education, to our global partnerships for student exchange. We are proud to have alumni in over 185 countries around the world, from all walks of life. This award recognises graduates championing diversity and inspiring inclusion.

Working towards a greener future

The final new category for the Alumni Achievement Awards champions alumni who are tackling climate change head on and making great strides in the global quest for Net Zero and sustainability.  Whether that be through leading sustainable change in the workplace, volunteering to make environmental change or launching new green businesses, nominees of the ‘Outstanding contribution to sustainability and environmental justice’ category should have a demonstrable passion for the future of the planet.

Newcastle University is ranked 4th in the UK for sustainable development (THE Impact rankings 2023) and is supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals – seeking peace and prosperity for all people and the planet now and in the future. We are working towards a better and fairer world, and this award celebrates alumni who share these values.

How to submit a nomination

The online nomination form for the Alumni Achievement Awards is now open. Graduates can nominate themselves for any of the above categories or can nominate a fellow graduate who is making a difference.

Nominations must be submitted by 21 April 2024 and must be seconded by another graduate in order to be counted. You must have your supporting statement ready before you submit your nomination.

Shortlisted alumni in the above categories will be celebrated at the Newcastle University Awards evening at Newcastle Civic Centre on Thursday 6 June 2024, which will showcase the impact our student and alumni communities are making for a brighter future.
