Award for work in pain relief for animals
Professor Paul Flecknell, Director of the Comparative Biology Centre at Newcastle University has been awarded the Charles River Laboratories’ Excellence in Refinement Award.
It honours an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the development, promotion and/or implementation of methods aimed at minimizing pain and distress for laboratory animals, known as “refinement”.
In awarding the prize, the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) highlighted how Professor Flecknell was a clear choice for the award, as much of his career has been devoted to making life less painful for laboratory animals. They explained how his efforts have greatly enhanced both the understanding of the complex nature of pain in laboratory animals and the ability to provide these animals with effective pain relief.
