Welcome to SELLL

Our School is a lively community of more than 700 undergraduates, 200 postgraduates and 60 staff. The first Chair of English was established in Newcastle in 1898, making us one of the oldest departments in the north of England. We combine this long and distinguished heritage with a culture of innovation, so that we offer excellent teaching and world-leading research in traditional areas as well as newly developing fields.

Newcastle has one of the largest concentrations of linguists and language scientists in the world, based in CRiLLS. Colleagues in the Literature subject group produce world-leading research (ranked 5th out of 87 UK departments) across a full range of subjects and periods, from Icelandic sagas to contemporary film. Our Creative Writing team includes internationally acclaimed authors. They work closely with the Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts, established to nourish our creativity and contribute to the cultural life of the North East of England through a wonderful programme of events and publications.

Our commitment to research-led teaching ensures a rich, diverse, innovative and internationally-recognised programme of degrees at Newcastle. And all this in one of the UK's most vibrant and historic cities, the capital of a beautiful and fascinating region.
