Scanning Electron Microscopy

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) allows high resolution imaging of surfaces.

Our lab houses a Tescan Vega 3LMU scanning electron microscope fitted with a Bruker XFlash® 6 | 30 detector for EDS analysis.

Typical applications include:

  • plant and animal tissue
  • materials
  • dental research
  • bacteria
  • freeze-fracture
  • biofilms
  • MEMS
  • quality control

SEM is offered as a service with staff providing full support in specimen preparation.

Most researchers will be trained and encouraged to use the SEM themselves to collect images.

SEM images from our facility have been used in an excellent book, Understanding Bee Anatomy: a full colour guide, by Ian Stell.
