Investigative Interviews with sexual offence suspects: Perspectives on theory and practice

A focus on aspects of sexual offence investigation is timely given the continued pressure on police resources and increases in reported sexual offences (UK). This talk will consider factors that influence the behaviour of interviewers and suspects within the investigative interview. Current research identifies behaviours that fit within an ethical and effective interviewing framework that can minimise barriers to successful interaction and promote information retrieval. The talk will also look at current practice and a preliminary analysis of a sample of UK police interviews. With the reduction in police capacity and resources and justified public concern, can research offer some options in developing interviewing practice within this challenging environment?
