World So Obscured

We developed an online exhibition that connected natural history objects at the GNM: Hancock, with six local women identifying artists and their practices.

It was the first solely digital exhibition devised by our students. In a time when physical contact was limited, the exhibition presented a playful way to consider our relationship with the natural world whilst profiling local artists.

Through this group exhibition, the students gained first-hand experience of creating an online exhibition including:

  • developing relationships with artists
  • thinking about the relationship of artworks and audiences in digital space
  • writing about artworks
  • marketing and audience engagement
  • project management and budgetary considerations

We partnered with Newcastle-based studio and arts organisation, The Newbridge Project to connect to a community of artists. Local artist and web designer, Rob Smith created the website for the project.

Module Leader: Dr Gayle Meikle

The exhibition included artwork by: Lucy Claire, Taya Franco, Mani Kambo, Iris Priest, Eleanor Scorah, Bethany Stead
