Collect your Smartcard

Your Newcastle University smartcard is an essential part of student life.

What is a smartcard?

Your smartcard is a physical card that includes:

  • your photograph
  • your name, unique student number and library number
  • confirmation of your student registration and identity

You will scan your smartcard to register attendance, access some buildings and check out library books.

To enable us to produce your smartcard, you must upload a high-quality, true-to-life photograph of yourself via the Student Portal.

Collection dates and locations

You can collect your smartcard:

From Tuesday 9 September to Friday 19 September (including Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September):

  • Lindisfarne Room, Hadrian Building, 09:00-17:00

From Monday 22 September onwards:

Live locally or arriving early?

If you're already in Newcastle or arriving early, we encourage you to collect your smartcard from:

  • Tuesday 2 September to Monday 7 September (excluding Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September)
Student Services, Level 1, King’s Gate

This period is usually quieter. There’s no need to make a special trip to collect your smartcard if you weren’t already planning to be in the city that week.
