Dolezal Consulting workshop series

Communication for Early Career Researchers

The Newcastle Wellcome Trust Translational Partnership are working with Digital and Content Marketing Specialist, Joanne Dolezal, to deliver a series of workshops focused on communication skills for Early Career Researchers.

The workshops are open to all Early Career Researchers across the University who wish to build their verbal and written communication skills, and learn techniques to overcome the numerous barriers to effective communication.

Whether you are seeking to improve the communication of your research project, gain tips for funding applications, or wanting to learn how to deal with killer questions, this is a great opportunity for you to enhance your ability to effectively communicate with different audiences.

Workshop programme format

Joanne will deliver the training in person as a three-part course at The Catalyst. The workshops will be in small groups of 6-8 attendees to provide a supportive learning environment with opportunities for individual feedback and discussion.

Workshop 1 – Stand out from the crowd

  • Creating an impact statement and beyond
  • Capture the value proposition of your research area
  • What is special about your research and how you do it?

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to understand what makes you, your values and research ethic unique and create your own value proposition statement.

Workshop 2 – Reach hearts and minds

  • Writing for different audiences, including funding applications.
  • Who are you talking to and what do they need to know?
  • How much do they understand about your specialism?

This workshop will equip you with the tools to communicate your research to different audiences plus tips on how to write an engaging research case for support. The importance of knowing your audience and understanding the questions asked will be emphasised.

Workshop 3 – Convince them!

  • What do you need to present your research?
  • How to anticipate and deal with killer questions
  • Develop and deliver your ‘elevator pitch'

The final workshop will conclude with you presenting your own ‘elevator pitch’ to a small panel. This will be an opportunity to gain feedback on your presentation style, a key skill for a variety of purposes including research funding, job interviews or potential investors.

Workshop dates

Due to the nature of small group workshops, we do not want anyone to miss out. We have therefore arranged for three separate cohorts to accommodate everyone. All workshops will take place between 9:30-11:30 on the following dates:

Cohort 1: Wednesday 10 August, Tuesday 23 August, Wednesday 14 September.

Cohort 2: Tuesday 20 September, Wednesday 5 October, Wednesday 19 October.

Cohort 3: Wednesday 2 November, Wednesday 16 November, Wednesday 30 November.

Participants must be able to attend all three workshop dates for the specified cohort. Spaces are limited so please register your interest
