The Nature of Brain Changes in the Progression of Bipolar Disorder

This proposal aims to examine cortical and subcortical brain differences in first- compared to multiple-bipolar patients to evaluate whether these changes, if present, are related to illness progression. This study will use cortical pattern matching, an imaging technique capable of matching structurally homologous brain regions between subjects, enabling the detection of abnormalities in cortical gray matter density. Considered as part of the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder, neuropsychological functioning will also be assessed to determine if it is associated with brain abnormalities occurring over the course of the disorder.
