About us

We have taught medicine in Newcastle since 1834. We are proud of our rich and vibrant history, which provides a strong foundation for innovation and growth.

We work with the other two faculties to promote a 'one University' ethos. This embodies Newcastle University’s values and guiding principles. We are home to over 1600 academics, technical and professional staff. They drive forward advances in world-leading research and education.

We aim to be the best Medical Sciences Faculty in the UK based on our:

  • research
  • education
  • impact
  • global reach

Equality, diversity and inclusion

We aim to promote, innovate and deliver meaningful equality, diversity and inclusion. These values are part of our organisational fabric, and extend to all staff and student groups. The Faculty holds an Athena SWAN Silver award (2018).

Pioneering Research

Our Faculty of Medical Sciences is home to a world-leading diverse range of disciplines. These include research scientists, engineers, medical doctors and teaching professionals.

Our goal is to transform innovative research into novel treatments that improve health for all. Our achievements include:

  • lifestyle intervention to reverse type 2 diabetes
  • IVF technique to prevent mitochondrial disease transmission from parent to child
  • novel drug treatment for ovarian cancer
  • virtual reality therapy to reduce anxiety and phobias in children with autism

Our focus areas are highlighted by our research themes. These unite teams across disciplines to tackle key challenges in health and healthcare.

Three research institutes support our themes and provide strategic guidance.

We benefit from world class facilities and equipment. Our Faculty recognises the expert contribution made by our technical community. Newcastle is a founder signatory of the Technician Commitment. Ensuring the development of this staff grouping and the technical career pathway.

Clinicians and healthcare professionals

Newcastle is a national leader in clinical academic career development. We host the NIHR National Training Dean. Our Clinical Academic Office provided cross-professional integration of training support. The NIHR Academy adopted the same model.

We developed the UK model for Academic Clinical Fellows and lecturers. This created the first UK Academic Foundation Programme.

Together with our NHS partners, we lead on career development for:

  • nurses
  • midwives
  • Allied Health professionals

We have strong relationships with local NHS Trusts. Together we oversee clinical research facilities and clinical trials in state-of-the-art facilities.

World-class teaching

We have a long-standing reputation for being one of the best places to study medicine, dentistry and health sciences in the world. Our subjects feature in the top 200 of major international rankings.

Our teaching gives you a varied and engaging experience. We use technology across all our subject areas to ensure you have access to the best online resources and learning environments. Students are at the heart of everything we do. The student voice is key to designing and reviewing all our teaching.

Faculty Research-led Education Federation (FREF)

We are committed to providing the best education possible to our students, and providing academic colleagues with opportunities to make a valuable contribution to the education of those students and develop their own well-rounded careers.

Our Faculty Research-led Education Federation (FREF) was formed in 2019 to lead on delivering high quality research informed teaching. It facilitates discussions between units and integration of research and teaching. It provides an interface for our institute-based colleagues and our teaching developments to encourage the generation of ideas, provide opportunities and innovation in education, and sharing best practice.
