The partnership between Newcastle University and University of Delaware was formalised on 25 April 2025.

The University of Delaware, a pioneer in Study Abroad programmes for over a century, launched its innovative World Scholars programme 10 years ago. The programme facilitates Study Abroad opportunities at select partner sites across the globe, allowing high-calibre participants to internationalise their studies and equip them with essential skills for a rapidly evolving, interconnected world.

Last year, Newcastle University won the bid to become Delaware’s fifth World Scholar site and from September 2025, a select number of students will undertake a semester of Study Abroad at Newcastle and will enrol onto a suite of modules relevant to their Engineering major.

The partnership was formalised on 25 April 2025 when Professor Chris Day, Vice-Chancellor and President of Newcastle University, and Dr. Dennis Assanis, President of the University of Delaware, signed an agreement to work collaboratively to facilitate this unique opportunity for students.

Professor Chris Day, Vice-Chancellor and President of Newcastle University commented:

"We are delighted to welcome the University of Delaware's World Scholars to Newcastle University. This partnership not only strengthens our international ties but also enriches our campus with diverse perspectives and global insights. By hosting these exceptional students, we are fostering an environment of mutual learning and cultural exchange that benefits both our institutions and the wider community."

A mutually beneficial partnership

For Delaware, this new partnership offers students the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of President Assanis, beginning their academic careers at a high-ranking, Russell Group university recognised for its research and teaching excellence. In return, hosting students from the University of Delaware will enrich Newcastle’s classrooms, inspire cultural connections, and add international vibrancy to our campus community.

Dr Assanis, President of the University of Delaware remarked:

"As an alum of Newcastle University, I have fond memories of my time there and the exceptional education I received. Partnering with Newcastle University is a wonderful opportunity for our World Scholars program. Newcastle's reputation for academic excellence and its vibrant, inclusive campus provides an ideal setting for our students to broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of global issues. I am excited about the many opportunities it will bring for both our institutions."
