Celebrating 30 years of partnership with Loyola University Maryland

Over the past three decades, Newcastle University has welcomed hundreds of students from over the pond to study on our campus and enjoy the Newcastle experience.

2 June 2025

To mark this special anniversary, alumni of the Newcastle-Loyola programme were recently invited to a celebratory event in Maryland, USA.

Since its inception in 1995, the global education partnership between Newcastle University and Loyola University Maryland has seen over 800 students arrive on campus and join our alumni community.

In May 2025, a special event was held at the Loyola campus to mark the significant milestone of 30 years of partnership. The event was attended by alumni from the programme, spanning Class of 1997 graduates all the way to recent graduates of the Class of 2025. Newcastle University’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Chris Day was also in attendance. He said:

"It was important to be here in person to mark the 30th anniversary of the partnership between Loyola and Newcastle. It has been the cornerstone of our international programmes, and its success is one of our proudest accomplishments."

The lively gathering was filled with nostalgic reflections and positive aspirations for the future. Alumni shared their experiences and memories, reinforcing the enduring and strong bonds formed through the partnership.

During the event, a heartfelt acknowledgment of thanks was given to Andre Colombat, whose vision and dedication led to the creation of the Loyola Study Abroad Center. This initiative has significantly expanded opportunities for STEM students, enriching their academic and international educational experiences.

The Loyola-Newcastle experience

Most students from Loyola spend a semester on campus living in Halls, and alongside their studies enjoy weekend trips to explore the rest of the UK and Europe led by the Loyola Center on campus.

The majority of Loyola students are enrolled in either the Combined Honours Centre or the School of Biomedical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences, and are also able to join student sports clubs and societies while in Newcastle.

Studying abroad in Newcastle has definitely changed me for the better. I’ve become much more confident in my studies, with new people, and with travelling. I feel far more connected to the rest of the world by getting to actually experience places I’ve dreamed about going my whole life and really immersing in the cultures.
