Designing and Constructing Cities

Theme Lead: Dr Sarah Dunn

This cities research theme covers the built environment in cities. It focuses on the interplay between hard and soft infrastructure. It considers the ability of digital technology to connect them.

We draw on our track record in integrated systems of infrastructure. This includes our link with service provisions. We also capitalise on our partnerships and facilities. This allows us to carry out research at many scales.

The concept of ‘design’ embraces many methodologies from many disciplines. It also calls upon learning from various approaches, such as:

  • master planning
  • citizen engagement
  • storytelling
  • co-design
  • bio-design
  • building information modelling
  • influence of different cultures and new technologies.

The focus on ‘constructing’ includes:

  • modern construction materials
  • supply chains
  • funding and financing
  • contracts
  • new forms of manufacturing-driven construction
  • processes such as biotechnology
  • living buildings
  • informal forms of construction in, for example, settlements and emergency camps
