Dr Kheng-Lim Goh

I am the Director of Research, Associate Professor & Reader (Mechanics of Composite Materials) at the Newcastle University in Singapore. I am also a Fellow (FIMechE) and Chartered Engineer (CEng) of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), and Fellow (FInstP) and Chartered Physicist (CPhys) of Institute of Physics (IoP). I have been appointed Global Engagement Fellow for 2020/21.

I specialize in Mechanics of Composite Materials, studying their mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical properties. I also takes a broad interest in the field of Materials Technology, focusing on the manufacturing process of materials and their applications in engineering, such as supporting structures, repairing, generating energy, purifying water, and capturing CO2 to mitigate Greenhouse gas emission. Additionally, I explore the broader impact of using materials in product manufacturing and their potential environmental pollution.

In mid-Oct 2023, I founded the Materials Technology Consortium (MTC) to advance sustainable composite materials research with international partners, including universities and industries from ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and The Philippines) and other Asian nations such as Bangladesh, China, India, and Sri Lanka. Highlights of my work conducted with my collaborators are found in Asia Research News which I welcome the reader to view, notably sustainable composite structures, energy, water, capturing CO2 and food.

I am very pleased to announce that my British Council funded work on Sustainable Composites Materials for Prosthesis has been recognised by JEC Composites Magazine, the world leading industry’s reference magazine, as an important innovation in Composites for Sustainability in 2023. My developed composite prosthesis has been selected and show-cased at the JEC 'Trend Book' 2023 Highlights, in an online video clip at


As Director of Research, I oversee to research activity linked to Singapore. In particular, I support the CEO & Dean (NUiS) in leading the strategy and development of research activity in Singapore and South East Asia, take a strategic overview of the development of research for NUiS, supporting the development of new research activity in partnership with the Directors of Innovation and Internationalisation.


Prior to joining Newcastle University, I have worked as a Post-doctoral Research Associate for a multidisciplinary project under the EU Framework V programme at Stirling and Cardiff University (2002-2005). I then accepted the post of Assistant Professor at the School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (2005-2009), followed by Senior lecturer at School of Engineering, Monash University Malaysia (2009-2011). In mid-2011, I joined Newcastle University Singapore as the founding Director of Operations (2011-2016) for the Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Engineering degree programme.


I hold a PhD from Aberdeen University-thanks to Aberdeen University Postgraduate Scholarship programme for supporting my study-MSc in Medical Physics from Aberdeen University, and MSc and BSc (Honours) in Physics from National University of Singapore (NUS).

  • My research concerns Materials Technology, focusing on the mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical characteristics of materials, their effective exploitation, and applications in engineering such as structural support/repair, energy generation, and water purification. I am also interested in the wider area surrounding how the materials that we used in making products could pollute our environment.
  • I lead the Advanced Composites-Materials Technology Research Group at the Newcastle Research & Innovation Institute (NewRIIS). I conduct research to characterise the materials properties (metals, plastics, ceramics, biological) to enable the material to be safely deployed in engineering systems. I also conduct research on optimising the performance of the materials over its operating life.
  • On-going research projects: (1) composite laminates for aerospace engineering (Materials Repair Technology Lab); (2) nanocomposite membrane for water filtration (see Youtube video); (3) nanocomposite biomaterials for biomedical engineering; (4) recycling polymer composites for energy generation devices and packaging; (5) cost-effective methods for manufacturing composites and structural health monitoring; (6) marine plastics and pollution
  • My work has been published in international journal papers (> 120 papers to-date), > 100 conference proceedings and book chapters. 
  • My projects have been supported by grants - where I hold Principal Investigator responsibility. For instance, the British Council Research Environment Links (REL) - where I brokered/initiated and led this project in collaboration with UniMAP, with support from Professor Tom Joyce who acted as the UK PI to meet the UK grant eligibility criteria, QR SPF (Singapore work package PI), EPSRC 'Partnering for GCRF' (Singapore work package PI), WDA Singapore (sponsorship by Singapore government to enable an employee, Ms Rachel WANG, from Sensorcraft Technology to study for the MPhil with NU), as well as Singapore Ministry of Education grants, notably the MOE TIF grants, awarded to my collaborators, and Malaysian FRGS funds, awarded to my Malaysian colalborators, where I am external PI of the respective project work packages.

  • In the area of Climate Change related research, in 2023, I collaborated with SIT colleagues and Xylem ( to secure a SGD$2.5 million research grant for Climate Change-related research on Singapore Coastal Protection. As the lead investigator for Newcastle University, I contribute expertise in materials technology for coastal protection and its impact on storm surges. The grant, awarded by PUB (Singapore Public Utilities Board), resulted from a consultation process initiated in 2020, during which Newcastle University (including Richard Dawson, myself, and other Singapore colleagues) provided valuable inputs.
  • In addition to research grants, I have also been successful in obtaining a business development grant, notably the UK Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) Tactical Funds to drive an international symposium on Electromobility to address shared challenges in the UK and Singapore. This came about due to my initiative, i.e. I led an initial electromobility workshop, initiated the electromobility workstream, developed the 'Singapore Electromobility' white paper and, subsequently, a second white paper on 'Delivering Electromobility in Singapore and UK: A Shared Challenge' with Colin Herron and Phil Blythe, and finally, through the narrative in my white papers, a proposed symposium emerged which was incorporated into the DSIT grant proposal. I led the Electromobility work stream to secure the grant with a team including Duncan Rayner, Colin Herron, Phil Blythe, Niels de Boar, and Stuart Edwards, with minimal contributions from Stuart and Niels in drafting the proposal.


  • In mid-Oct 2023, I founded the Materials Technology Consortium (MTC) to drive research and innovation in sustainable composite materials with various international university and industry partners from, notably ASEAN countries - Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and The Philippines - and other Asian countries outside ASEAN, notably Bangladesh, China, India and Sri Lanka. NB: the industry partners are notably Nano-Tech SPA, Imetrum Ltd, TEAnity, Sensorcraft Technology (S) Pte Ltd.
  • The purpose of the MTC is to provide a new platform to advance our understanding of how sustainable composites respond to impact during service, with a focus on enhancing their long-term performance. This will serve as a foundation for devising 'nip-in-the-bud' repair strategies to extend their lifespan and enhance industry sustainability. 
  • To deliver on the goal, I have developed a five-year plan with two objectives: (1) improving our understanding of how fibre extraction processes and moisture absorption influence the composite's resistance to impact; (2) developing effective repair technology to enhance the performance of sustainable composites post-repair.
  • The first objective shall be achieved by empirical research to provide new knowledge on how the two factors affect the composite's durability. The second objective will involve pushing the boundaries of composite mechanics to integrate a new repair model. This model will guide the development of innovative technologies for repairing damaged sustainable composites, complemented by experimental studies using a resin-injection system that I have successfully developed for repairing conventional carbon fibre-reinforced composites.
  • The MTC will benefit from resources at my Materials Repair Technology Laboratory, laboratories of NU collaborators at the Design, Manufacture and Materials research group, and composite laboratories of existing partners in other universities and companies in the Maintenance and Repair Operation (MRO) sector. These resources will be used to address sustainable composites made from the unique renewable resources of the partner country.

  • Chris ONG (PhD candidate, Jan 2019-now; Sup: A/P Chun Yang Yin, A/P KL Goh) NB: Chris's project is in the area of 3D printing of sustainable composites. I am the overall in-charge of his project, assisted by my colleague Chun Yang Yin. His project was initiated by me, align to the objectives of my Materials Technology Research Group. The key resource, 3D printing facility and mechanical testing systems, comes from my Research Group as well as from my closed collaborators at Nanyang Polytechnic and SIT.
  • Boon Tick LOH (PhD, Sep 2019-now; Supe: Asst/P JJ Chong, A/P KL Goh) NB: Tick Boon's project is in the area of monitoring of vibration and evaluation of the mechanical integrity of concrete/composite bridges, using a novel imaging method Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and compression testing. I am the overall in-charge of his project, assisted by my colleague JJ Chong. Although the project was formulated as part of an initial discussion with LTA, the method involving DIC supported by compression testing was initiated by me, align to the objectives of my Materials Technology Research Group. Through my initiatives, the supervisory panel expanded to include two external supervisors/collaborators from National University of Singapore: A/P Siang Huat Goh (my long-term collaborator, ex-colleague) and Dr Kong Kian Hau. Tick Boon's main equipment, namely the DIC system was supported by Imetrum Ltd, a UK company which I have a long term engagement going all the way back to 2017, when I started serving on the technical committee for the annual conference organised by British Society for Strain Measurement (BSSM).
  • Hui Xin LOH (PhD, 2023; Supe: Asst/P Yuen Ling NG, A/P KL Goh) NB: Hui Xin's project is on plant-based meat and cultivated meat. This project was entirely initiated by Hui Xin, who initially approached me to help supervise her PhD based on my experience in connective tissue mechanics research. Since then, I have expanded the supervisory team to include Dr Ng Yuen Ling (my Singapore colleague) and collaborator/panel progression lead, Professor Che Connon (NU UK), who is an expert in innovative bio-materials for regenerative tissues. This work is supported by A*STAR; the A*STAR supervisor is Dr Andrew Wan. Dr Wan is the Principal Investigator at Singapore Institute of Food and Biotechnology Innovation (A*STAR).

  • #1 Thermal defects in Carbon-fibre reinforced composites: Hee-Juon Pang, an undergraduate student, excelled in optical microscopy during his BEng final year project. After graduating in 2014, he joined the speaker's research group in 2018 for an MPhil degree, focusing on thermal defects in carbon fiber composites. The speaker provided access to advanced imaging equipment, guiding Hee-Juon in using optical microscopy, particularly image-mapping, to analyze composites. He developed an innovative high-throughput optical approach and graduated in 2021. His findings were published in a book chapter and his method is now applied in ongoing projects, benefiting current postgraduate students.
  • #2 Micromechanical testing of sustainable composite membranes for water filtration: Since 2006, mine partnership with Sensorcraft Technology led to securing a £39.8k sponsorship from the Workforce Development Agency for engineer Rachel Wang's MPhil study. She developed a micromechanical tester for sustainable composite membrane testing in collaboration with SLINTEC. This collaboration, including access to Monash University's lab, resulted in innovation and substantial returns for Sensorcraft. Rachel graduated in 2020, and in 2023, a patent for the membrane was jointly awarded to SLINTEC, Monash University, and NU, showcasing successful supervision and industry collaboration. See (
  • #3 Structural health monitoring of composite structures in bridges project: I have mentored Tick-Boon Loh, a PhD student and Republic Polytechnic lecturer, in his collaboration with Imetrum Ltd. This support secured imaging equipment for Tick-Boon's experiments, enhancing his understanding of imaging systems for composite structure health monitoring. He published research benefiting Imetrum. I have also introduced AI imaging techniques through a funded PUB project, enabling Tick-Boon to propose a novel AI imaging approach for bridge assessment. In 2023, they submitted a grant application for S$312k to the Singapore Ministry of Education, enriching Tick-Boon's academic journey. See (
  • #4 Plastic composite repair & sustainability projects: I have mentored Wei-Liang Lai during his PhD, securing lab equipment for composite repair experiments in collaboration with Nano-Tech SPA and Sensorcraft Technology. Wei-Liang's project won an award and resulted in six journal publications, benefiting Nano-Tech. I have also introduced Wei-Liang to international collaborators for an energy-harvesting project, leading to grant funding and knowledge-sharing with SembWaste. These successes inspired Wei-Liang to become a lecturer at Republic Polytechnic and continue research with my research group. See ( & (
