Dr Kheng-Lim Goh

Director of Research & Associate Professor/Reader in Materials Technology


I am the Director of Research and Associate Professor/Reader in Materials Technology at the Newcastle University in Singapore. I am also a Fellow (FIMechE) and Chartered Engineer (CEng) of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), and Member (MInstP) and Chartered Physicist (CPhys) of Institute of Physics (IoP). I have been appointed Global Engagement Fellow for 2020/21.

Director of Research
As Director of Research, I oversee to research activity linked to Singapore. In particular, I support the CEO & Dean (NUiS) in leading the strategy and development of research activity in Singapore and South East Asia, take a strategic overview of the development of research for NUiS, supporting the development of new research activity in partnership with the Directors of Innovation and Internationalisation.

Prior to joining Newcastle University, I have worked as a Post-doctoral Fellow for a multidisciplinary project under the EU Framework V programme at Stirling and Cardiff University (2002-2005). I then accepted the post of Assistant Professor at the School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (2005-2009), followed by Senior lecturer at School of Engineering, Monash University Malaysia (2009-2011). In mid-2011, I joined Newcastle University Singapore as the founding Director of Operations (2011-2016) for the Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Engineering degree programme.

I hold a PhD from Aberdeen University-thanks to Aberdeen University Postgraduate Scholarship programme for supporting my study-MSc in Medical Physics from Aberdeen University, and MSc and BSc (Honours) in Physics from National University of Singapore (NUS).

1. Research Profile

  • My research centers around Materials Technology. I am interested in structure and properties of a material, concerning how the material can be made, and how we can apply the material for engineering applications. 
  • Currently, I lead the Advanced Composites Research (ACR) Group at the Newcastle Research & Innovation Institute (NewRIIS). I work on characterisation of materials properties (metals, plastics, ceramics, biological) to enable the material to be safely deployed in engineering systems. I also work on optimising the performance of the materials over its operating life. 
  • In the area of composite materials, I am interested in the study of the mechanics of composite materials, covering development (lightweight composite materials), damage studies and repair, sustainability (UN SDG, Net Zero), mechanical systems and structures underpinning composite materials, with applications from aerospace, to automotive, construction and biomedical industry.
  • On-going research projects: (1) composite laminates for aerospace engineering; (2) nanocomposite membrane for water filtration (see Youtube video); (3) nanocomposite biomaterials for biomedical engineering; (4) recycling polymer composites for energy; (5) A.I. for cost-effective methods for manufacturing composites and structural health monitoring ("A.I. Composites"); (6) marine plastics and pollution
  • My work has been published in several international journal papers, conference proceedings and book chapters.

  • I am the author of the authoritative book on Discontinuous fibre reinforced composites: fundamental of stress transfer and fracture (Springer). I have also edited a book on Interfaces in fibre and particle reinforced composite materials (Elsevier).
  • I am a topical editor for the Journal of Mechanical Sciences (Topical area: dynamics and control) as well as other editorial boards of international journals.
  • I have been invited as Plenary and Keynote speakers to present my insights and findings in the mechanics of composite materials at several international conferences, in areas from biocomposites to engineering composites. More recently, I have been invited to be the Plenary speaker for the Heidemann lecture at IULTCS 2019, Dresden, an international conference attended by members of the union of Leather Technologists and Chemists societies.
  • I am an active reviewer for EPSRC, MRC and other UK research councils.
  • My research group, Advanced Composites Research (ACR), actively collaborates with several world leading international researchers, based in the Argentina, France, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and UK. 
  • As a Global Engagement Fellow 2020/21, I am currently working with colleagues at University of Pittsburg (USA) on materials and sustainability.
