$1 million Singapore Dollars (SGD) donated to support aspiring engineering and medical students at our international campuses.
Alumni donation will support the next generation of students at Newcastle University Malaysia (NUMed) and Newcastle University in Singapore (NUiS)
1 May 2025
Dr Choo Chiau Beng (MSc Naval Architecture, 1971) and Dr Eileen Lim (MBBS, 1972) have generously donated $1,000,000 (SGD) to create a permanent endowment supporting the next generation of students at Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) and Newcastle University in Singapore (NUiS).
Our international campuses in Malaysia and Singapore play a vital role in our mission to provide world-class research and education that creates a positive global impact.
NUMed Malaysia has been offering undergraduate degrees in Medical and Biomedical Sciences since 2011. Our Singapore campus (NUiS), established in 2009, provides degrees in Engineering and Science and has proudly seen over 1,000 graduates to date. This endowment will help ensure that future medics and engineers at these campuses have access to an exceptional education, regardless of their socioeconomic background.
The Choo-Lim Scholarship Fund
Scholarships play a transformative role in breaking down socio-economic barriers, enabling talented individuals to pursue their dreams, making initiatives like the Choo-Lim Scholarship Fund more important than ever.

Professor Jonathan Galloway, CEO and Provost of Newcastle University in Singapore (NUiS), said:
"We are delighted that Dr Lim and Dr Choo, both Newcastle University alumni, have provided such a generous donation to establish the Choo-Lim Scholarship Fund, and it is particularly fitting that the scholarship will be used to support students studying with Newcastle University in Singapore and in Malaysia, where we have longstanding University campuses.
The Choo-Lim Scholarship will afford opportunity to students to receive an outstanding educational qualification, and ensure the recipients are not held back on account of financial means.
Dr Choo and Dr Lim are an inspiration, not only on account of significant personal and professional accomplishment but in their support of the next generation.”
About our donors
Dr Choo received an honorary degree from Newcastle University in 2009 for his exceptional leadership in the marine and offshore construction industry and Dr Lim has been a steadfast partner in supporting education and philanthropy.
Together, they embody the transformative power of higher education and its profound societal impact.
Helping our students thrive
Our mission to give Newcastle students the best possible opportunities is at the heart of everything we do. Our aim is to give each student the skills and experiences they need to thrive while with us, and in their future.
We don't want any student to miss out on what makes belonging to Newcastle University so special. With your help, we can fund scholarships to ensure no student misses out on a Newcastle experience.
If you’d like to discuss how you can help us in this mission, please get in touch with Alexa Charlton, Head of Individual Major Giving at Newcastle University.
