Alumni volunteers make a vital difference in supporting current students, as well as future generations of Newcastle students and their fellow graduates too!
On campus, and around the world, we could not do all that we do without the generous and ongoing support of enthusiastic volunteers.
If you are interested in giving back your time, knowledge and wisdom, please register your interest to volunteer by completing our short form. Below are the key areas where volunteering can have the biggest impact, and some examples of activities and opportunities that you could be approached about. Please note that we cannot guarantee volunteering opportunities in any given year.
For our students
Inspiring the next generation to study at Newcastle University
Alumni are often the best champions of our university, with the power to inspire the students of tomorrow to join the Newcastle community. You can play a part in recruiting the next generation of Newcastle students as an alumni volunteer, both in person and virtually throughout the year. Student recruitment opportunities include:
- Featuring at virtual open days, application webinars and panel events
- Attending in-person experience days for our Offer Holders in the UK and key international regions (Africa, East Asia, China, Europe, China Europe and UKI, South Asia and Southeast Asia)
- Participating in our PARTNERS supported progression programme

Helping current students take the first steps on their career journey
You can play a vital role in supporting current students as they enter the workplace and climb the career ladder. Share your own career journey to highlight the abundant options available to new graduates and help them feel confident in their choices.
If you’d like support current students in making career decisions, you can support in person or virtually throughout the year. Some examples of potential activities you could help with include:
- Providing your insight into the reality of working in some of the most sought-after graduate destinations and sectors.
- Helping Chinese students kickstart their career through our China Career Gateway.
- Mentoring a current student, providing one-to-one guidance and support.
- Participating in our annual Creative Careers event, inspiring students who are interested in careers within the creative sector.

Help lead our alumni networks around the world
Alumni volunteers are crucial in keeping our global, 270,000-strong alumni community connected with each other and Newcastle after they leave.
We have a whole host of Alumni Networks already established and organised by amazing volunteers around the world. These include:
- Graduates living in certain parts of the world.
- Graduates from the same course or working in the same industry.
- Graduates who have a shared passion for a sport or hobby.
You can help with the organisation of an established Alumni Network or create your own!

For society
NCL in Action is an annual programme that unites Newcastle University’s staff, students, alumni and partners to take action on a meaningful cause affecting all our daily lives, from sustainability and social justice to ageing and AI.
Now in its sixth year, the 2025/26 NCL in Action programme will explore the themes of geopolitics, climate change, technology and AI, and the economy – so whatever the future has in store for us, we are ready.
